  • Mt. Evans

    8 Sep 2010 | 1:01 am | B3bouldering.com

It was a great weekend of sending up in the high country. Daniel Woods did the FA of Warrior Up V15. This is an amazing roof problem on excellent rock. The first move is the crux, and it involved a massive reach off of a flat undercling in a very steep roof to what could be generously described as a non-hold. A great new problem and Dave Graham made a repeat later in the day. Dave described the problem to me as a one move V12 or V13 to a V12. Dave also added a new compression arete, Freak Attack V12. As I described in the previous post, I added a nice problem left of Small Arms called Honey Badger, which I was tempted to call V12, but I will take the more conservative approach and suggest V11. Honey Badger V11, Mt. Evans FA from Jamie Emerson on Vimeo. Perhaps new beta will be discovered, or it simply wasn’t as hard as I thought. Regardless, it’s a fun problem and I have some video of it to share. Saturday I climbed my namesake problem although I was quite tired. I think Nick Duttle’s problem Jamie Emerson is probably V10. This problem was repeated by Sam Johnson, Justin Jaeger, Luke Parady, Chad Greedy and Angie Payne. Kaelen Williams added a sitstart at hard V10. I also believe that Rebellion, a classic V8 or V9 has a new direct finish which climbs onto another boulder. Dave also did all the moves on The Ski jump project which will probably be V13 or V14. And there are still a bunch of unclimbed lines waiting. I will do my best to take more pictures when I get out.

  • Mt. Evans

    5 Sep 2010 | 5:09 pm | B3bouldering.com

Mt. Evans Friday I went to Lincoln Lake and had a great day. I climbed my project Evil Backwards V14 after perhaps 10-12 days of effort. I think this is the hardest problem I have ever climbed and it’s nice to accomplish something after so much time, effort and thought. Wolverineland continues to be an amazing source of motivation and I will have more updates in the coming week on all of the action. Thanks to Brian Capps for bringing this and filming. Here is uncut footage of the send. Evil Backwards V14 from Jamie Emerson on Vimeo. After a long session on Monday I was quite sore and thought it would be wise to take a the next few days off. It’s a great feeling to have an awesome project in a beautiful area, feel well rested and to have good conditions. All of the factors came together on Friday. I hiked in with Brian and got warmed up. To give you some insight as to what goes on for me to climb something at my limit I will share some of the thinking process. Organizing the near infinite options underneath Evil Backwards. I had been going back and forth about a very minute but important piece of beta. The third move of the problem is the move many consider the crux. It is very similar to the move on Crown of Aragorn, but for me it is a much harder version. I figured out the easiest way for me to do the move was with a heel, and the best heel for the job was the Anasazi Velcro. The next two moves are very hard tension moves which set the climber up for a difficult foot cut. Unfortunately, the foot-cut was much easier from the toe than the heel. Because[…]

  • 8C at Lincoln Lake?

    5 Sep 2010 | 9:37 am | Mountains and Water

Daniel Woods and Dave Graham reported on 8a.nu that they both did Warrior Up, a roof problem at Wolverine Land, the newly developed area near Lincoln Lake on Mount Evans. Both note the problem as soft for the grade.A fuller report is available at the Low Down.(Update: Video of the ascent by Daniel)Video Of Jamie Emerson's ascent of Evil Backwards V14The cooler weather will see more high-grade ascents in the coming weeks, no doubt. For my part, I am hoping my lower back and pelvis feel better fast. The timing of last Sunday's slip-and-fall could not have been worse. I took a quick trip to Chaos on Friday afternoon and found that bouldering was very frustrating owing to the constant fear of hitting that area again. I am confident things will get better but time in the high country is running short.

  • Perverse Traverse

    2 Sep 2010 | 10:37 am | NoahHowell.com

Perverse Traverse Jim Harris and I attempted to traverse Mt Olympus, Twin Peaks and Lone Peak in one day. The total route is 17,000ft of climbing and descending over roughly 23miles. I’ve never so underestimated the terrain and time it would take and at the end of a very long day the heat, route chosen and difficult scrambling shut us down with 2 out of 3 peaks. Here is Jim on top of Twin Peaks in the 90+ temps. I’ll turn the time over to Jim and his blog to tell the story HERE.

  • Lars Chickering Ayers gets 2nd at Las Leñas

    30 Aug 2010 | 4:04 pm | the winter life

Lars Chickering Ayers gets 2nd at Las Leñas We’re proud to announce that Flylow athlete Lars Chickering Ayers placed second on Friday at stop #2 of the Freeskiing World Tour at Las Leñas, Argentina. The event was held, despite poor snow conditions, on a venue called Eduardo’s. Lars, who won the 2010 Freeskiing World Championships at Snowbird, Utah, last spring, dominated on the one-run event in Argentina. “I just skied one of the most fun comp runs I’ve ever had,” Lars said after he pulled into the finish. “I want to go up and do it again.” Lars is originally from Vermont but now spends most of his time in Utah. Congrats, Lars.

  • city of rocks

    24 Aug 2010 | 9:22 am | NoahHowell.com

city of rocks Traded in the city of salt for the city of rocks this weekend. Yes, there is an entire city of rocks. I had heard of it, but never before been If I were a rock climber and were to build a city I’m quite sure it would look something like this. Andy Jacobsen was my guide. We came to climb so climb we did I’m just starting out, so this was like summer climbing camp. Andy has been climbing for a very long time. He would lead and I tried to follow. ‘Bloody Fingers’ was the highlight of our first day. Here’s a look down! Our patient climbing companions Ken and Toast. Some rain ended lessons a little early. The Bread Loaves near camp were all buttered up at sunset. By end of day one i was feeling much more comfortable on the rock and with my gear. A good mixed bag of climbing from 5.7, 5.8, several 5.10’s and Andy powering through a 5.11c. Breegfast Found our way to the ‘Drilling Fields’ wall and this beautiful 5.11. I led my second pitch ever, a 5.10a sport route which was much more exciting than top roping! Weather came in and we explored in the rain. We stayed dry while AJ worked on this 5.12 overhang. ‘I can’t believe it’ was a really fun 5.10 that we both led. Here’s Andy working over the roof. Toast on the prowl It was getting a bit late and the rain seemed to clear everybody out. We hoped on this 3 pitch route (5.10c I think) hoping to get up and off before dark. Perfect route to end the trip and the day! We rapped off at dusk and the moon came out. Thanks Andy for showing me the ropes. It’s pretty awesome to[…]
